What is Naturopathic Medicine?

The Canadian Association of Naturopathic Doctors  (CAND) defines Naturopathic Medicine as a distinct primary health care system that combines both scientific knowledge and evidence based medicine with traditional forms of medicine. The naturopathic philosophy is to stimulate the innate healing power of the body and treat the underlying cause of disease to optimize each of the different systems of the body. Symptoms of disease are seen as signs of dysfunction in the body. Naturopathic Medicine emphasizes disease as a process rather than as an entity.

Each individual’s anatomical, physiological, structural, psychological, social, spiritual, environment and lifestyle factors and needs are taken into account to formulate a treatment plan.  Naturopathic doctors use a wide variety of treatment options that may include; diet and lifestyle changes, botanical medicine, clinical nutrition, and acupuncture.  Pharmaceuticals and lab testing are also used when indicated.

In Canada, the naturopathic medical profession’s infrastructure includes accredited educational institutions, professional licensing, national standards of practice, participation in many federal health committee initiatives, and a commitment to state-of-the-art scientific research.
